Being the part of the body that removes waste, the bladder is an integral part of our body. As the organ that stores urine, and thus helps eliminate excess nutrients and waste products from the body, the bladder plays an integral role in many bodily functions.

There are three variations of bladder cancer that can occur, based on the kind of cells that cause cancer. There are no exact causes of bladder cancer but there have been many risk factors that have been identified to increase the chances of bladder cancer which include use of tobacco, infections or irritations in the bladder, age, gender and possibly family history. Use of tobacco is said to increase the chances of bladder cancer by two or three times. Although a person may have one or more of the above mentioned risk factors, they are not definite causes for developing the disease. Symptoms of bladder cancer include needing to urinate often, pain during urinating, and blood mixed with urine. Again, having these symptoms does not mean that bladder cancer is present, as infections, bladder stones and benign tumours can cause similar symptoms, but it is advisable to check with a doctor if symptoms like such appear. Doctor’s use physical tests, urine tests and, in some cases, biopsies, to diagnose the cause of symptoms that appear. Biopsies are considered a sure way of finding if bladder cancer is present or not.

Bladder cancer occurs in four stages, separated as such due to the extent of penetration of cancer cells in the bladder. Stage 0 is when the cancer cells appear only in the inner lining of the bladder, whereas Stage IV is when the cancer cells have spread through the body and reached other organs, like the lungs or pelvis. The three stages in between refer to how far the cancer cells have spread in the bladder or to the rest of the body, in their various levels.

There are a range of treatments for bladder cancer which patients can ask their doctor’s about, from chemo or radiation therapy to surgery. A combination of a number of therapies can also be used. Going according to doctor’s advice is best for the patient, when it comes to such treaments. Loss of apetite and feeling nauseous are side-effects of some therapy, but making sure the right nutrients are given to the patient is a vital step in recovery. Talking to a doctor or dietician will give the patient more information on the diet that the patient needs to follow, so that recovery can be made faster and easier.

Bones help in movement, giving structure to our body and hence are known as the supporting framework of the body.

It is necessary to know more about the structure of the bone, to have an improved understanding of bone cancer.

The outer part of the bone is a fibrous tissue called matrix on which calcium salts are laid down. The matrix is part of the outer membrane of the bone- the Periosteum.

Inside hollow bones, there is a soft tissue known as bone marrow, found in a space called the Medullary cavity. The bone marrow can be either a fatty tissue only or a mixture of fat cells as well as blood generating cells. These blood generating cells in the bone marrow are responsible for the production of Erythrocytes, Leukocytes and Platelets, which are important components of blood.

At the two ends of a bone, there is a tissue known as cartilage which is soft but firm, acting as a cushion between bones.
The bone tissue or the osseous tissue contains two different kinds of cells. They are, Osteoblast and Osteoclast which are functionally known as the ‘bone forming cells’ and cells that dissolve or breakdown bone tissues, respectively.

The term ‘tissue’ is frequently mentioned above. It can be defined simply, as a group of cells who have a common function. Therefore, it is obvious out of the many cells that form a bone, any can develop to a cancer.

There are several types of bone cancers- ‘metastatic cancer’ (which is a cancer that was spread from somewhere else from the bone, bone marrow related cancers that gives rise to ‘multiple myeloma’, leukemia also commonly known as blood cancer) and lymphomas The main type of bone cancers are the bone tumors that starts in the bone, which are also known as primary bone tumors. Though most primary bone tumors lead to bone cancer, not all are cancerous.

Some cancerous primary bone tumors are:
Osteosarcoma – (also known as Osteogenic sarcoma) a major primary bone cancers that start in the bone cells.
Chondrosarcoma a bone cancer that starts in the cartilage cells (the second most common primary bone cancer).
Ewing tumor (which is a bone cancer starting off either in bones or in other tissues)
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) which starts off in soft tissues than in bones
Fibrosarcoma (which is also similar to MFH)
Giant cell tumor of bone (which is less often found as a bone cancer- as it takes the non cancerous form)
Chordoma (a bone cancer that develops in the skull and bones of the spine).

By using radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, all these different types of bone cancers can be treated.

As soon as you the phrase ‘breast cancer’; the picture of a woman takes shape in your mind. Only the women are prone to this malady. Though rare, males can also contract this type of cancer. Cancer that starts in tissues of the breast in males and females is commonly known as breast cancer which is the second most common cancer type in the world.

Initial symptom of breast cancer is the sensation of a growth or swelling in the locality of breast or underarm. Other symptoms may be a change in size and shape of the breast, nipple inversion, skin irritation or dimpling, swelling of the full breast or part of it, and a discharge from the nipple. It pays to be cognizant of these signs for early detection of cancer.

At the first sign of breast cancer, the prudent thing to do is to consult a doctor. The physician will check your breast for any suspicious growth or lump. Benign lumps are different to the touch from the cancerous lumps. If the doctor suspects it to be cancer, he will clear any doubts he has with the aid of an xray mammography, an ultrasound scan, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan or a biopsy. Provided that you are tested positive, he will order more lab tests so that they will assist him in learning more about your disease and its course of therapy.

Various therapy methods are available for breast cancer. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy are such treatments. From amongst these, radiation and surgery are known as local treatments. The rest is known as systemic treatments. The former removes or destroys the cancer in the breast whilst the latter enters the blood stream and controls or destroys the cancer.

Breast cancer is related to various risk factors. If you are a female, the chances of contracting this disease is great as a female’s breast cells are open to hormones like estrogen and progesterone at all times. As you grow old, the risks grow too. If someone in your family has had breast cancer, you are more at risk than those who do not have a significant family history.

Breast cancer is supposed to be the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the world. You can imagine the seriousness of the problem. Anyway, it is consolation enough to learn that vast amounts of funds are expended on research to discover the causes and plan out therapy methods of this disease.

It is not uncommon to hear about many new, and different, types of diseases spreading in today’s world. AIDS was unheard of until around 20 years ago, and now suddenly it is the biggest epidemic to hit humans in today’s world. Similarly, another disease to become widespread recently is cancer. While getting cancer can be a terrifying experience, there have also been great breakthroughs in this field of research with many cures identified in the recent past. To this day the actual reasons behind cancer have been hard to find. Research has found many risk factors that increase a person’s chance of getting cancer, but these are not exact causes for it either. It all seems to be left to chance.

What is cancer? All living cells in our body go through a repeated process of being made (born), living and then finally death. These dead cells are then removed from our body through various mechanisms that take place in our body. For some people however, for no known reasons as yet, the ‘reproduction’ of these new cells takes place at a faster rate. Because of the irregularity, more and more healthy cells are formed when they are not needed. when there are too many of the cells formed, they become a collection which serve no purpose. This mass of cells is called a tumor, which if malignant (i.e. harmful) is then termed cancer. Depending on which area of the body these tumors form, the cancer is named differently. For example, if found in lungs it is called lung cancer, and if in the bone, then bone cancer. The mass formed could either remain in one place or spread through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body. For spreading to occur, some cancer cells should break free from the tumor and move to other regions in the body.
Treatments for cancer can vary according to the severity of the disease. Surgery is used on some tumors to remove them from the body, but when a mass cannot be separated by surgery, treatments like radiation therapy or chemotherapy are used to kill the cancer cells.

Having cancer can be a terrifying experience, but it does not mean the end of the road for anyone. Getting proper treatment, eating the right kinds of food, making small changes in your lifestyle, and most importantly, ALWAYS being positive are the best ways to make sure you enjoy life for many more years to come!

Although there are a lot of cancer facts available from a variety of sources. Fortunately for patients, unlike in times past, cancer doesn’t mean certain death anymore. With more companies and scientists worldwide devoting time and money to research, a cure for cancer may soon be within reach.

What is the definition of cancer? One of the best known cancer facts is that it has something to do with tumors and the word tumor is often used interchangeably with cancer. However, it is possibly for a tumor to be benign and hence not be dangerous to the patient. (A benign tumor is one which does not invade other cells or parts of the body. A malignant tumor, on the other hand, shows uncontrolled growth, invades and possibly destroys nearby tissues and may show metastasis as well (i.e. spreading to another part of the body).

its site and nature. Another of the cancer facts that could surprise you is that it can even be caused by some types of poisonous mushrooms and a toxin that can grow on peanut plants. (Although the toxin can grow on the peanut plant, the peanuts and the plant itself are not dangerous.)

Other encouraging cancer facts include the fact that there has been a reduction in cancer-related deaths. This is thought to be caused by the growing awareness of health related issues and the dramatic drop in the number of smokers. They are also careful about overexposure to UV rays which can cause cancer. More good news in cancer facts is that there’s more and more awareness of the disease and organisations worldwide are teaming up to fight cancer.

While cancer is a complicated disease to treat, with patients sometimes needing several doctors (specialists in different areas), who may not always agree with each other, patients should not give up. Alternative treatments have been known to give patients a much-needed boost, and have sometimes been credited with being responsible for a complete recovery.

Statistical cancer facts may not be available to prove this, but faith in their religion can help a patient through the tough times that come with having cancer. In the words of Winston Churchill, never give in.

The concept of cancer insurance is rather simple. It is when benefits, regardless of other insurances a person can have, are directly paid to the person, so that the person involved can use these benefits provided by the cancer insurance to help pay off the extra costs in their cancer treatment. In most cases; however, there need to be medical proof which verifies that a person in question is diagnosed with cancer, to get the cancer insurance.

Cancer has become the leading cause of the increasing death rates among people of all ages. The risk of being cancer patient increases with age, according to the statistics of American Cancer Society.

The medicines required to treat cancer, and therapies such as radio and chemo therapies as well as the surgeries that a cancer patient would need to undergo, all add up to a large expense. Therefore, a large amount of financial support will be required when treating cancer; the overall expenditure when treating cancer in United States (year 2007) was estimated by the national institute of health- to be approximately 9.2 billion, of which, billion was medical costs.

Therefore, though a person might have a normal health insurance that could cover the expenses of day to day medical requirements and in case of accidents; it is doubtful whether those insurances can cover the high costs of cancer treatments. Hence, it is important for a cancer patient to consider cancer insurance.

There are more than one specific way of cancer insurance, such as private health insurance methods and government-funded insurance plans that includes Medicare and Medicaid – in the United States.

Other financial resources that are also available for cancer patients are: government programs, aid from voluntary organizations, disability benefits and living benefits from life insurance policies.

When purchasing cancer insurance, there are certain points that are required to be considered. It is important, at first, to find out about the coverage available under your present health care policy; in case you are diagnosed with cancer. Reconsider whether you actually need cancer insurance, if you are on Medicaid or some other government funded insurance plan.

If you are sure that cancer insurance is for you, then you should think about the best cancer policy that meets your needs at the most affordable price, but you should make sure to read and understand the cancer policies first (specially the limitations).

Find out what is covered and not covered by the cancer policy; find out whether there is any coverage for other diseases that might occur due to the cancer or its treatment and whether the benefits provided by your other health insurance policies will be affected.

Choosing a cancer insurance that is best suited, if done wisely, would be the best way of ensuring financial support for a cancer patient.

The human body comprises various types of cells which are grouped together to make up the organs and tissues. There are more than 200 different types of body cells. Cancer is a disease caused by normal cells changing, with the result that they grow in an uncontrolled fashion and thereby cause a tumor to be formed which, in turn, will make problems by creeping into normal cells nearby or by causing pressure on other body structures. Cancer research is concerned with making out the roots of cancer and finding out how to diagnose, treat, cure and prevent this mortal illness.

In the world today, there are many NGO’s and government sponsored institutions engaged in comprehensive cancer research work. These organizations expend very large amounts of money yearly on such studies. Normally such research work is spread from epidemiology, molecular bioscience to the carrying out of clinical trials of different treatment applications so as to evaluate and compare the efficacy of such applications. However, since 1990’s, the focus of these research has been centered on immunotherapy and gene therapy.

Some non-governmental organizations such as American Institute for Cancer Research (AIR) and Cancer Research UK have been funding thousands of scientists, doctors, and other research students in cancer research. Their studies encompasses nearly every field of cancer related topics via widespread programs of top-notch studies in universities, hospices and other institutions world-wide.

Increasing numbers of talented students, researchers and scientists are participating in cancer research studies with a view to rooting out this mortal illness that troubles hundreds of thousands of persons all over the world. The would-be scholars of cancer research may keep in mind that they have access to really informative and instructive research findings and resources from the Internet. At the same time, if they are looking for some research grant or fellowship to carry out cancer research work to save the lives of millions of cancer patients in the world, they have a ready reference guide in the Internet where a simple search will give them a plethora of websites of such organizations that are all too ready to grant such assistance.

Concerned people, be it patients or scholars, want to keep abreast of the most recent information on new types of treatment of cancer. Internet has all these. Anyway, without relying on one source of study results, it is of use to confirm the most recent facts from several others too. Please make note, cancer research is not a stagnant procedure.

Cancer begins in cells and affects the functioning of the whole body, overtime. The basic nature of cancer owes to abnormal duplication of cells which happens uncontrollably. Eventually, there will be a mass of cells forming in the body known as tumors. While tumors can be of two types, only malignant ones are cancerous The other type is called benign meaning non cancerous.

The Harmful cancer cells usually divide rapidly entering other nearby tissue and organs disorting the normal functioning of the body. The cancerous cells can also swim through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system to form new tumors elsewhere

Cancers are usually named after the place in which it starts. Therefore, names of types of cancers vary accordingly. If a lung cancer affects the brain, it is still called a metastatic lung cancer for the simple reason that cancerous cells originated in the lungs.

The four most common cancer types are breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer Breast cancers are usually diagnosed through annual mammograms or through identified lumps in the breasts or through discharges from the nipples. The most common therapies used for breast cancer are chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy.

Colon cancer on the other hand are usually accompanied by symptoms such as weight loss, bowel habit changes, discomfort and pain in abdomen, as well as fatigue. While the causes of colon cancers are not clear cut, it is known, that genetic mutations that are passed down generations can act a risk factor.

Similarly, genetics plays a big role in lung cancer. But the most common cause of lung cancer in the world is tobacco smoking, marijuana, exposure to radon and recurring inflammation of the lungs due to conditions such as pneumonia and tuberculosis. The common treatments for lung cancer are none other than chemotherapy, radiation therapy and sometimes surgery.

When it comes to prostate cancer, the treatment options vary according to the stage of the illness. Patients in the first stage of prostate cancer are often given external radiation as well as radical prostatectomy. For stage II, radiation therapies and hormonal therapies may work out. For stage III and IV, patients may want to move in to clinical trials of chemotherapy or continue radiation therapy along with hormone therapy. Causes of prostate cancer is not crystal clear but it is believed that risk factors run in African American genes and has a connection with dietary habits and age.

The cervix is the part of the woman’s womb that opens into the vagina. It is the connection between where a fetus lies to the birth canal. Cancer that forms in this cervix is generally found in the mid region of this connecting area, better known as the transformation zone. This transformation zone is the meddle region of a cervix.

Cervical cancer is said to have two types, depending on the type of cell it affects, and the most common is called squamous cell carcinoma. This kind of cancer is found when the squamous cells on the lining of the cervix closer to the vagina start producing too many cells that interfere with the actions of healthy cells. The other type, and one that is much rarer, is called adenocarcinoma, and is present when mucus secreting gland cells become cancerous. This type of cancer has for some reason become common in women born in the last twenty to thirty years.

Cervical cancer may be diagnosed more in those showing the following risk factors. But it is important to remember that exhibiting these risk factors does not mean you will definitely have cervical cancer. Being infected by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is said to increase your chances of getting cervical cancer greatly. HPV is more commonly known for the skin ailments it produces on different parts of the human body, from lips to genitalia. It is spread through skin-to-skin contact and so can be spread by intercourse, oral or anal sex. The Pap test is a good way of knowing if you have been infected by this virus. But it is important to know that having this virus does not mean you have cervical cancer.Smoking is considered another big risk factor in women. Carcinogens in the tobacco have been found in the mucus formed by the cervix and so it is said women who smoke are at twice the risk of forming cervical cancers. Also things like a woman’s diet, her use of oral contraceptives, having an immunosuppressive disease and having a family history of cervical cancer is said to increase the chances of developing cervical cancer. Again, it is important to remember that having these risk factors does not necessarily mean you will have cervical cancer, but it is always better to do a few tests.

Treatment for cervical cancer can be done by surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. It is most common to be treated using a combination of two of these methods, and it is always advisable to listen to what the doctor has to say about these treatments.

Cancer occurs when cells that are dividing go about doing that too often, producing more cells than are necessary in the area, and these are named according to the area it occurs in. The colon, better known as the large intestine, is a part of the body that assists in digestion. It is the last organ involved in the digestive tract. If cancer cells form in the inner lining of this colon, or at the rectum, that kind of cancer is called colon cancer. Colon cancer has beome an everyday disease in today’s world.

All cells in a human body undergo the process of life and death. Cancer occurs when this cell growth becomes uncontrolled and when the body’s natural defense mechanism, the immune system, cannot control it. These cells then form a mass, better known as tumors. Tumors can be either benign or malignant. Benign tumors do not spread or invade any other part of the body. Malignant tumors on the other hand keep dividing uncontrollable and can invade other parts of the body and destroy the healthy cells in the body.

Like all other cancers there are known risk factors that increase a person’s chance of being affected by colon cancer. Those over the age of 40 are said to be at a higher risk of developing colon cancer, and colon cancer has rarely been diagnosed in those under forty. Having a family history of colon cancer can also increase the chances of developing the disease. Other factors like having benign tumors, a bad diet and other ailments that can pose risks are also said to be risk factors.

Having one of these risk factors does not mean you will definitely get colon cancer. Symptoms like bleeding from the rectum should never be ignored, but they do not mean you have colon cancer. Changes in bowel habits, pain in the abdomen or rectum and a feeling that bowel movement cannot be completed are also symptoms. Again having these symptoms does not mean you have colon cancer but they should be taken seriously and a doctor has to be consulted to find out what may be causing these irregularities.

Advances in science and the field of medicine mean that cure rates for this type of cancer are quite high. Treatments for colon cancer include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and usually a combination of these therapies is given to a patient to increase the efficiency of treatment.
