ovarian cancer

The female reproductive system is composed of many different parts. Of these many organs, one of the most important in reproduction is the ovary, the organ that produces the egg which later can get fertilized. Because of its pivotal role in the body, the ovary is also a site of many important hormone productions, and can be considered important to many everyday processes. As such an active part of the female body, there are cells in the ovary that are constantly growing and maturing. Ovarian cancer is when there is a tumor in the ovary.

Being diagnosed with ovarian cancer is a distressing experience for any woman. As no one knows exactly why the cancer forms in the first place there is not much that can be done as preventive methods. It is because of this that being aware of any changes that occur in your body is very important. As the ovary is involved with the menstrual cycle,  being alert to any changes in the cycle would be a good way of identifying the disease early on. Going to a doctor at the earliest signs of something happening out of the ordinary would be a good idea to find out what the causes for these changes are. Sometimes the doctor may recommend surgically removing the affected ovary as that would stop the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. Ovarian cancer need not be the end of the line for women these days. There are a wide array of drugs prescribed by doctors which provide the needed hormones for the body to function as it always did. And since there are two ovaries present in the female body, it does not mean that removing one ovary because of ovarian cancer would mean there is no chance for childbirth later in life. Science has progressed greatly over the past years and so ovarian cancer can be successfully treated and cured, as long as it is diagnosed early enough.

Dealing with ovarian cancer, or any other form of cancer, is not an easy experience. It is a life changing event and you only help yourself when you make sure you are with people who want the best for you. Make sure the treatment that you take is something you are comfortable with and something recommended by your doctor. And be positive – you can help yourself through this disease. You are stronger than you know!

uterinecancer

Uterine cancer is also called the cancer of the uterus and endometrial cancer. Scientists and researchers all over the world are trying to find out the causes of this ailment and the ways and means of preventing it.  This is not infectious even though the reason or reasons for some people being stricken with it and others not, are unknown.  It is noteworthy to mention that results are available to prove that women who contract this disease have more risk factors than those who don’t.  It is ironic that some women who contract this disease have no such risk factors whereas still others, who have these factors, do not get the disease.

The womb, medically known as uterus, is the organ where a baby grows. It is a vital organ in a female’s reproductive system. Endometrial cancer or uterine cancer, which affects the inside layer of the womb, is the most commonplace cancer from amongst the other cancers that afflict the uterus. This type of cancer is more common in women who are 50 years of age and are in postmenopausal stage in their lives.

There are several symptoms connected with this ailment.   The most familiar sign of uterine cancer is the unusual flow of blood or discharge from the womb. Whatever flow of blood or discharge from the womb after the onset of the menopause is deemed to be not normal.  Difficulty and trouble in urinating is another.  Pelvic pain and pain during intercourse are another two symptoms of possible uterine cancer.

It is advisable for women who experience these painful conditions to consult a doctor without any delay. But it always may be possible that these symptoms are false alarms as they may be caused by less serious conditions.  Only a doctor can confirm it.  However, the disease is capable of progressing without showing any of these symptoms. Pelvic pain or pressure may be the precursor if this happens.

Uterine cancer is associated with women who have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, have not borne any children, are afflicted with hypertension or diabetes, and have a history of irregular menses.    It is said to be connected with hormones, especially with estrogen.  Whatever is said and done, since prevention is better than cure, it is most advisable to consult a doctor the moment you suspect that you may be the next victim of uterine cancer.

Lung cancer

Lungs are one of the biggest organs in a human body. Divided into two as the left and right lungs, this is the region of the body where the air we breathe is separated so that oxygen reaches our blood, our only source of making energy. So what is lung cancer? The cells in each lung, and the whole body for that matter, go through the usual life cycle of living and dying. It is when old cells die that new cells should be formed to take their place. Lung cancer occurs when new cells keep forming while the old cells are still healthy and functioning. These cells would not have room to be present, and they also have no function as they would not be able to specialize into the different types of cells because there is no reason for them to. Hence extra cells in the lungs stay together as a growth, more commonly known as tumors. Tumors are differentiated into two, according to the degree of harm they cause in a body as benign and malignant. Benign tumors pose no harm to the person as they do not spread and do not interfere with the usual processes of the body. Malignant tumors in the lung are what we call lung cancer. These malignant tumors may pose more harm if a few cells break free from the mass and spread to other parts of the body, mostly through the lymphatic system.

Tobacco use is said to be one of the biggest reasons for lung cancer. The worst part is that you do not have to be a smoker yourself to be affected. Being exposed to secondhand smoking can have the same result on your body. So if you live with someone who smokes a lot, work in an area where there are lots of smokers around, or are in any way in the presence of smoke from a cigarette, you are at the same risk that the person who is smoking is in. Tobacco smoke has carcinogens, chemicals that cause cells to start dividing irregularly and out of ‘tune’, thereby producing an excess number of cells in a particular part of the body. There have been many lawsuits against tobacco companies as they are not said to have made the impact tobacco has in the causation of lung cancer clear for the public. It is now the law that every cigarette packet should have a warning in bold letters mentioning how ‘tobacco is harmful to health’.

Depending on the severity of cancer, therapy varies for each individual. Doctor’s would prescribe one or a combination of the following few as treatment methods, depending on each individual. Surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are some of the most common treatments for lung cancer. More than any kind of therapy, being positive and having faith that you can get through this is the best and fastest way to a cure!

skincancer

Being diagnosed with cancer is one of the scariest things that can happen to a person. While fear can subdue one’s will to survive, one should remember that with early detection and treatment, the cancer can be defeated.

There are several types of cancer, and even in a smaller subset such as skin cancer there’s more than one type.

Skin cancer can be either a carcinoma or a melanoma. A melanoma is the skin cancer that starts from the melanocytes. It is more likely than the carcinomas to spread to other parts of the body, but fortunately is the rarest form of skin cancer.  The most common forms of skin cancer are basal and squamous cell carcinomas.

So what are basal and squamous cells and melanocytes? The epidermis (top layer of the skin) is made up of three types of cells:
Squamous cells – An upper layer of thin, flat cells.
Basal cells – Round cells just under the squamous cells.
Melanocytes – These produce melanin, the pigment that colours skin.

Risk factors for skin cancer include having fair skin, chronic inflammations or ulcers, scars or burns, having had radiation therapy and being exposed to a lot of either artificial (as in tanning booths) or natural UV rays. Keep in mind that just because one of the risk factors applies to you, it doesn’t mean that you will certainly get skin cancer. However, there is a chance of forming a skin cancer in the absence of any visible risk factors.

One of the best ways of preventing skin cancer is by minimizing damage to the skin through overexposure to sunlight, so wearing sunscreen is recommended. Also, the sooner a cancer is caught and treated, the higher the chances of success. Skin cancer looks different depending on which type it is, and a professional opinion can be invaluable in diagnosing the disease at its early stages.

If diagnosed with skin cancer, there are several organizations out there that provide support and information. A good source of information is the National Cancer Institute, which has a comprehensive and clear website, and reliable professionals available to assist by telephone, email, post or chat.
